Deep
Sea Fishing Industry facts
-
British
fishing boats operate not only close to shore, but also on distant
fishing grounds as far afield as the White Sea, Bear Island, Newfoundland,
Greenland, and the Norwegian coast.
-
The
boats range in size from less than 7 metres in length fishing single-handed,
to over 50 metres and manned by crews of over 30 hands.
- A typical
fishing boat of about 20 metres in length carries a crew of five or
six staying at sea for
several
days.
- There
are
now about 9,000 registered fishing vessels in the fleet, providing jobs
for over 20,000 full and part-time fishermen and fisherwomen.
- The
600,000 tonnes of fish landed each year help to support another 100,000
jobs onshore in processing and supporting industries.
